Description
Bat Rays appear to be flying through the water by flapping their bat-like wings, which are technically considered their pectoral fins. They use these fins to brush away sand on the ocean floor when looking for food. They dig large pits while searching for food and also use their snout like nose to assist in loosening up the ocean floor. They feed on mollusks, crustaceans and small fish found on the seabed.
Bat Rays are not considered aggressive and typically use the spines located on their tail only when being attacked or frightened. Before pups are born, their spine is covered with a sheath that sloughs off shortly after birth.
