Description
Sea Otters are an aquatic member of the weasel family is found along the California Coast. The sea otter is most often seen floating around on it's back but some populations are known to haul out onto land as well.
Sea Otters are most often seen float at the water's surface, lying on their back. They sleep this way, often gathered in groups called a raft. Otters can often be found floating or sleeping in kelp forests or seaweed paddies, in which they entangle themselves to keep from free floating at sea.
Sea otters take meticulous care of their fur. Sea Otters do not have a blubber layer and rely on their dense fur to keep them warm.
