Description
Sea Otters are an aquatic mammal, spending most of their time on the water. Many are surprised to learn that they are a member of the weasel family, however if you ever see one hauled out on land and walking, it is very easy to make that connection. Sea Otters feed on crabs, clams, worms and other yummy morsels that they dive down to the sea floor and pick up. Otters are well known for using tools to aid them in their feeding process. They often carry a rock tucked up in a skin flap in their armpit. Sea Otters spend their awake time eating and meticulously grooming their dense fur. They do not have a blubber layer and therefore depend greatly on their fur to keep them warm. It is not uncommon to see sea otters holding paws or have their paw or flipper wrapped in kelp or some other anchoring debris to keep them from floating away.
