Artist's Description

Megaptera novaeangliae more commonly known as the Humpback whale. We are quite lucky here in the Monterey Bay to have such a healthy and active population of Humpback whales. This lovely giant put on a show for us by breaching repeatedly. Those beautiful long pectoral fins are the longest appendage of any animal species, reaching upwards of 15 feet long. You can easily see the ventral pleats on this whale, stretching from its chin to it's bellybutton. Yes, whales have bellybuttons! Humpbacks expand those throat pleats as they lunge through the water, scooping up approximately 500 gallons of see water and schooling fish or krill. They then contract the pleats, forcing the water through their baleen trapping the fish or kill.
