Description
Humpbacks are a medium size whale, however if you ever get to see one up close, they seem really big. Their tail, is made up of the shaft called the peduncle, and each tip of the tail is referred to as a fluke. So, a whale has flukes. These flukes on an adult whale average between 15-17 feet across from tip to tip. The whale tail differs from a fish in that the flukes lay horizontal, whereas a fish has vertical flukes. With just a couple swishes of their flukes a humpback whale can launch itself completely out of the water. Quite an awe inspiring things to see.
